Construction dust is finer than everyday household dust, and it settles everywhere: on window sills, inside cabinets and drawers, in light fixtures, along baseboards, and in HVAC vents. A regular cleaning only skims the surface, and the dust keeps coming back.
A proper post-construction clean works from top to bottom. Ceilings, fixtures, and vents come first so dust doesn't fall onto surfaces that have already been cleaned. Then walls, trim, windows, and frames, followed by cabinets inside and out, new appliances, and bathroom fixtures.
Floors are always last. They're vacuumed to pick up the grit, then mopped to remove the residue that dust leaves behind on hard surfaces. Skipping the vacuum and going straight to the mop just pushes fine dust around.
Timing matters too. Schedule the clean after the trades have finished but before the final walkthrough, move-in, or opening day. That way the first impression of a new or remodeled space is the finished work, not the dust.
